Stress is a burden to us all -- medical students, teachers, writers, and athletes alike. We get so overwhelmed with our daily tasks, that it can seem like a little too much is on our plate. And I have for sure (FOR SURE) had my days when I feel like throwing in the towel and quitting everything. But guess what? Life doesn't have to be as stressful as you think. There are some small things that you can do to take some of that stress away, which will have a positive impact on your total health overtime!
Some of you may be able to relate to this, but being a Biology major during undergrad is not a joke. Not only the material that we have to learn is difficult, but trying to balance that with all of our extracurriculars causes us to reach an entirely new level of stress. Now that I'm about to start medical school, I am fully aware that my stress levels are about to skyrocket. But that's okay, it's just what comes with being a student doctor! However, I am also fully aware that I need to do as much as possible to keep my stress levels as low as possible. Here are a few things that help me in my everyday life to stay organized and productive:
1. Make lists.
When I start my day, and I know that there is a lot that I need to get done, the first thing I do is make a to-do list. This not only helps me organize my thoughts, but it also helps me to remember everything that I need to do (my short-term memory is quite terrible, so if I don't write things down, I WILL forget to do them). I also do this with assignments or any studying that needs to get done. Being a student (not just medical), you will have plenty of assignments to turn in and plenty of studying to do. Writing down all of that in a planner or even just on a sheet of paper will help prevent some of the procrastination that we all experience at some point or another.
2. Write down events and major plans on your wall calendar.
If you don't already have a wall calendar, get one! This has literally been a life saver for me since high school. I write down all of my hair appointments, quizzes and tests, and important events on my calendar, because I look at it everyday. And it's hard to forget something if you see it everyday. I also like to color-code it -- hair appointments (or other money making activities) in green; quizzes, tests, and assignment due dates in red; and holidays and important events in blue. For visual people (like myself) color-coding is extremely helpful when trying to prioritize things.
3. Clean your work/living area.
A messy house = a messy brain. This is so true for me, because my environment directly impacts my productivity (which may be caused my slight OCD). If my workspace is messy, I can't even concentrate on studying effectively because I'm so focused on the fact that my desk is a mess. Now, your brain may not function exactly like mine, but having a clean house improves your spiritual and mental health. And having an improved mental state will definitely allow you to be more productive.
These are just a few tips to help declutter your brain, relieve some stress, and increase your productivity. Depending on your occupation, everyone is going to experience different levels of stress, but doing these 3 things will definitely help you to relax and remain unbothered!
